The use of a first person narrator That the protagonist/narrator is “an ordinary, humane person” That the protagonist/narrator is a writer That the protagonist reads Life on the Mississippi The mention of the atom bomb in the first paragraph The fact that the story is told by as a flashback.
Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twin of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi. He looks back on the river with great affection and describes the loss of pure nature through the competition with railways etc. as modern means of transport. In Twain´s view the Mississippi has been destroyed by modern technology and man´s greed. ‹#›
Defamiliarization
A literary technique – used to create suspense: “Later on Fast uses suspense to engage his reader again. When Mr. Morgan fist meets the ant, we do not know that it is an ant: “I was just reaching for a fresh cigarette, when I looked up and saw it on the foot of my bed”. For several pages the ant is referred to as “it”, and it is not described until it is brought to the museum.” (Prip)
