(Union College)

Union College is a private, non-denominational liberal arts college located in Schenectady, New York, United States. Founded in the wake of the American Revolution, it was the first institution of higher learning chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. In the 19th century, it became the "Mother of Fraternities", as three of the earliest such organizations were established there. After 175 years as a traditional all-male institution, Union College began enrolling women in 1970.

An Organ of Fire and Ice

An Organ of Fire and Ice

Musical Aspects 14 note range combines musical versatility and ease of manufacture. Allows full scales of C major, F major, and D harmonic minor. Notes activated by piano-style keyboard. The keys act as levers, opening exhaust caps on the tubes. Introduction Musical instruments use many techniques to produce the oscillations we hear as sound. Some use air moving through a tube, while others use a vibrating string. All these instruments use mechanical energy to create acoustic waves. It is possible to use thermal energy to create sound. A carefully designed pipe can, using the principles of thermoacoustics, transform heat into acoustic energy. This organ is uses a steep temperature gradient to amplify ambient oscillations of the air and produce music. Thermoacoustic Theory Thermoacoustics is the interaction of the thermal energy in heat and the mechanical energy in sound. Its governing principles are the Second Law of Thermodynamics and the Ideal Gas Law. In the fire organ, hot and cold temperatures at two points in the tube are maintained with input energy, and moving air is the output. A heat exchanger adds heat to the air at the point where the air is already the most compressed. The exchanger is maintained at a higher temperature, so heat flows into the air. This causes the air to expand more than it otherwise would. At the cold side, heat is removed at the point where the air is already its coolest, making the air contract farther than p...

Tod replies to Clark. (p. 725) “dismayed as I am at the time and manner of his renewing this discussion, I am still more dismayed at his arguments.” (725) “If supported and protected, they [iron workers] will add more real strength and wealth to our country, than the cultivation here of all the cotton raised on this continent, and Egypt and Bengal put together, could possibly do; for this work is carried on by free labor, [and] that [work is carried on] by slaves.” (726)

Economics 24 Effects of Protection CONNECT TO ECO 24 WEB SITE Consider the British corn industry, and suppose, initially, that there is free trade in corn. The situation for the British corn market and a typical British corn farmer are shown in figure 1, below. The world price of corn is PW. Two Dimensional Working Model of Knee Ligament Failure Abstract:  The goal of this project is to create a two dimensional working model of the human knee joint.  The design will be based off of previous four bar linkage designs and will be improved to better simulate natural motion of the knee joint as well as simulate anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments failure.
