Human communication can be seen to be characterised by symbol systems which both draw on and are molded by establised codes of meaning, which in morph into ever new manifestations with their own rules and impacts. Theories which explore the impact of computer-mediated media on professional communication are complex and diverse. Some researchers have looked at the ways in which new media use old communications genre in ways which create a hybrid form with its own rules, norms and culture.
The theme of much current research and writing is on the way in which new interactive, information media impacts not only on the methods of communication, but on the notions, rules and impact of communication from a social, political, economic and cultural perspective.
Given that you have been studying various aspects, characteristics and perspectives of electronic texts, I thought that it might be useful in this last class to revisit and overview some of the debate around the relationship between different media technologies and the way they operate for an audience. This lecture only aims to give a simple overview as the debates are complex and often heated.
