The University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is the oldest university in Australia. It was established in Sydney in 1850. It is a member of Australia's "Group of Eight" universities that are highly ranked in terms of their research performance. In 2009, the university had 47,775 students making it the second largest (behind Monash University) in Australia.

Radio-mode feedback in Radio-loud AGN

Radio-mode feedback in Radio-loud AGN

BEL - face-on AGN? cold accretion? Abs - hot accretion? NEL - obscured AGN? cold accretion? Figure 1. Colour – redshift plot of radio-loud galaxies and showing where the different populations of radio-loud AGN may lie. Is this figure caused by an evolutionary sequence of radio-loud AGN?? John H. Y. CHING1, Scott Croom1,Elaine Sadler1, 1Sydney Institute for Astronomy, School of Physics, The University of Sydney Andrew Hopkins1 and Helen Johnston1 3. What’s New? A sample of flux-limited radio galaxies has been selected by cross-matching the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) catalogue with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric catalogue for galaxies within the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA), WiggleZ, and 2df-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey regions. Spare-fibres from the GAMA and WiggleZ surveys will allow us to measure the redshifts for those in the sample which have poor or no SDSS spectroscopic redshifts. Covering these large survey regions serves two purposes: 1. it provides us with a parent sample in the same field so we have enough nearby sources to determine the local environment. 2. it provides a large enough redshift range (0.0 < z < 1.1, Figure 2) to measure evolution over almost half the age of the Universe. 4. What I’m Doing? In order to address the questions raised in Figure 1, I will look be looking at the correlation between spectral type and environment, as well as comparing star formation rates. These tests will compare g...
