The New Look of WIC WIC is now 35 years old. Was designed to address the nutritional problems of the 1960s and 1970s IRONICALLY, among the problems at that time was mal-nutrition among infants. At that time, WIC was credited with improving the health of infants by providing them with iron fortified infant formula. NOW, we hope to improve the health of infants by NOT providing them with formula and encouraging BREASTFEEDING instead. We have always had a mandate to provide nutrition education to the participant. Initially, we used a model of clinical service delivery that was common at the time. We assessed problems and then told our participants how to fix them. Does this work? We also know that our service delivery model is not the most effective one for convincing participants to change their behaviors. The nutritional problems of the 1960s and 1970s are NOT the nutritional problems of the new millennium. We are now faced with the challenges of the obesity epidemic, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and encouraging breastfeeding. Therefore, embarking on changing our food package and our service delivery model. By 2009, WIC will be providing a new assortment of foods, enhanced breastfeeding support efforts and participant centered nutrition education. The new foods will be lower in fat, higher in fiber and more culturally appropriate. WIC did not undertake these initiatives on its own. USDA contracted with IOM to make recommendations for program improvement. The IOM set the f...

In the search for answers, we have found more than we bargained for.
