* ISSUES TO ADDRESS... • When we combine two elements... what equilibrium state do we get? • In particular, if we specify... --a composition (e.g., wt% Cu - wt% Ni), and --a temperature (T ) then... How many phases do we get? What is the composition of each phase? How much of each phase do we get? Chapter 9: Phase Diagrams Phase B Phase A Nickel atom Copper atom

* ISSUES TO ADDRESS... • Why does corrosion occur? • What metals are most likely to corrode? • How do temperature and environment affect corrosion rate? • How do we suppress corrosion? CHAPTER 17: CORROSION AND DEGRADATION

* ISSUES TO ADDRESS... • Transforming one phase into another takes time. • How does the rate of transformation depend on time and T ? • How can we slow down the transformation so that we can engineering non-equilibrium structures? • Are the mechanical properties of non-equilibrium structures better? Fe g (Austenite) Eutectoid transformation C FCC Fe3C (cementite) a (ferrite) + (BCC) Chapter 10: Phase Transformations

* ISSUES TO ADDRESS... • Why are dislocations observed primarily in metals and alloys? • How are strength and dislocation motion related? • How do we increase strength? • How can heating change strength and other properties? Chapter 7: Dislocations & Strengthening Mechanisms

* ISSUES TO ADDRESS... • Stress and strain: What are they and why are they used instead of load and deformation? • Elastic behavior: When loads are small, how much deformation occurs? What materials deform least? • Plastic behavior: At what point does permanent deformation occur? What materials are most resistant to permanent deformation? • Toughness and ductility: What are they and how do we measure them? Chapter 6: Mechanical Properties
