So you think you have an Idea? SLIDE 1 Since many types of protection for intellectual property depend on confidentiality, I thought this was an appropriate point to start. I always tell any would-be inventors whether or not you think you have an invention until you know it definitely isn’t then keep everything secret. Obviously, one can discuss things with your supervisor but I would say stop here. Confidentiality Agreements are usually quite standard although if a lawyer is trying to justify his fee he may make them long winded. Basically, they need to ensure that any data, material etc provided for review is kept confidential. It also needs to ensure that the person/company receiving the material cannot go out and begin work in this area. Companies will have their own Agreement. If you are asked to sign one it is worthwhile having it checked.
