The black hole at the Galactic centre§ How do you detect a black hole at the centre of our Galaxy? Measure stellar “proper motions” Galactic centre only ~8kpc away – so it’s a great place to study BHs Use Newton’s laws to derive the mass of “Sgr A*” (later in the context of galaxy rotation curves and dark matter) § This 1-page ppt file and the 2 movies are here http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jkw/phys2160/Galcen/ but see http://www.mpe.mpg.de/ir/GC/prop.html and http://www.mpe.mpg.de/ir/GC/index.php for more details Note: mass remains constant at ~3x106M out to ~1pc
