Water Quality: Making the Connection Between You and the Water Developed by: Susan Donaldson University of Nevada Cooperative Extension UNCE, Reno, Nev. Instructor: This lesson is somewhat more abstract than the others in the series, but emphasizes the need for every resident of every watershed to learn to protect their water quality. Whenever possible, use local examples and photos to bring the lesson home. Here’s an activity to get people thinking about their water. Give each participant a 3” x 5” index card. Then take them outside, and have them predict where runoff water will flow. Is there a storm drain? What is the closest water body? Have them write a phrase on their card describing where they think runoff water will go. Inside, shuffle up the cards and pass them out. Ask each participant to talk about the phrase written on the card and characterize any potential water quality impacts should pollutants be carried to the location written on the card. At the end of the class, ask participants to once again look at their cards, and list the categories of pollutants that might be present at the location they visited when beginning the activity. This slide shows a photo of Lake Tahoe, a national treasure famed for its exceptional clarity and purity.

Focusing on Stewardship for Long-term Sustainability Developed by: Cinda Williams, University of Idaho Extension Kevin Laughlin, University of Idaho Extension Susan Donaldson, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Univ. of Idaho Extension Throughout this course, we have been learning about land stewardship. We have examined individual components to look at the specific details of your goals, land, soil, wildfire threat reduction, plants, animals, and potential business opportunities. In this module, we will bring together all of the lessons you have learned throughout the Living on the Land course so that we can look at them from a whole-property systems perspective. We will review and expand our understanding of what it means to be a steward of the land and gain a better understanding of sustainability. We will explore how the management practices we have learned about relate to the long-term big picture of a sustainable farming system. We will also introduce some additional concepts of sustainability, including renewable energy and the social context of sustainability.

My Place on a Stream Developed by: Sherman Swanson, University of Nevada, Reno Susan Donaldson, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension UNCE, Reno, Nev. Instructor: This lesson was developed primarily for those participants who have a creek, stream, or wetland on their property. If the majority of participants do NOT have a surface water body, you will need to adapt the lesson or omit it. For some audiences, the lesson on pond care may be more appropriate. Slides 1 through 26 and 49 through 59 are general in nature, while the remainder of the slides may advocate action or management that is not appropriate for all participants.
