An Overview of the REU Site, Expectations and Work Anant R. Kukreti Associate Dean & Professor Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering College of Engineering University of Cincinnati June 22, 2009

Students should learn new and complex information about planetary processes and local details relating to drinking water sources and uses, the potential impacts of global warming, current technologies for drinking water treatment, the process of engineering design, and methods for mathematical and chemical analysis of drinking water. This knowledge will be applied to analyze local water balance; predict future impacts; design a treatment device; test it; describe it verbally, in writing, and by drawings; and defend it to a judge. Students will Calculate available drinking water source quantities and withdrawls, Evaluate status of local drinking water supply vs. demand, and compare to national average data, Predict impact of global warming on local drinking water supplies, Collaborate with classmate team to choose appropriate technologies for design, then construct and test a drinking water treatment device, Write a comprehensive report justifying design choices, analyzing cost, predicting environmental impacts, plus create a labeled drawing of initial and final designs, Verbally explain design, performance and intent to judges.
