The University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham (informally Birmingham University) is a British 'Redbrick' university located in the city of Birmingham, England. Founded in Edgbaston in 1900 as a successor to Mason Science College, and with origins dating back to the 1825 Birmingham Medical School, it was the first British university to gain official royal charter in the 20th century. It is a member of the Russell Group of research universities and a founding member of Universitas 21. The student population includes around 16,500 undergraduate and 8000 postgraduate students, making it the largest university in the West Midlands region. As of 2006-07 it is the fourth most popular English university by number of applications. The annual income of the institution for 2007-08 was £411.6m, with an expenditure of £393.2m

Chapter 10
What is meningitis ?

What is meningitis ?

Inflammation and oedema of the meninges usually confined to the subarachnoid space. Usually caused by an infectious agent, mainly viruses or bacteria. Death often results from increased pressure on the brainstem resulting in apnoea. It is NOT an infection of the substance of the brain. It is most common in young children.

“ Testing the predictive power of semi-analytic models using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey” Juan Esteban González Birmingham, 24/06/08 Collaborators: Cedric Lacey, Carlton Baugh, Carlos Frenk.

Introduction Results Current/future work Hypothesis Methods Core genome: 11 SNPs (10 genes) Accessory genome: 3 SNPs (3 genes) Natural polymorphisms: 4 SNPs (2 genes) Mutations in the promoter regions of patA/B were not observed in any of the laboratory mutants or clinical isolates that over-expressed these genes2, unpublished data. Therefore, we hypothesise that over-expression of patA/B is caused by a mutation elsewhere in the genome. Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important human pathogen that causes respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and sinusitis, as well as more serious invasive infections. Fluoroquinolone resistance is prevalent in the UK – in 2007-8, 95.6% of isolates showed intermediate ciprofloxacin resistance and 4.4% were fully resistant (BSAC). S. pneumoniae can become resistant to fluoroquinolones via: mutations in topoisomerase genes (parC, parE, gyrA and gyrB) active efflux of the antibiotic from the cell The PatAB efflux pump: Over-expression of an ABC transporter, PatAB, confers low-level resistance to ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, as well as other agents such as ethidium bromide, acriflavine and cetrimide1,2. Over-expression of patAB has been observed in: Two laboratory mutants selected on reserpine A ciprofloxacin-selected laboratory mutant Fluoroquinolone-resistant clinical isolates Illumina sequencing 50 bp reads Published R6 Whole genome seque...
