Why did we do all that Chemistry? To expose you to my math, chemistry and physics expectations for the class There are no prerequisites for GES 389. You will always get a “mini-lecture” on relevant math, chemistry or physics. To expose you to the Ideal Gas Law and some implications for climate To distinguish between ppm (by mass) and ppmv (by volume) After all that work, we’re going to drop the “v” when we write a gas concentration. You have to remember that in atmospherics it still usually means “by volume”. If there is ambiguity, “by mass” or “by volume” will be stated explicitly. Examples: The greenhouse effect depends on the number of absorbers (gas molecules), not the mass of those molecules. (use ppmv) The rate of fossil fuel burning might be inferred from the mass fraction of atmospheric CO2 but not the volume/number fraction. (use ppm)
