A Practical Introduction to Copyright James Maynard, PhD Assistant Curator The Poetry Collection jlm46@buffalo.edu Good morning everyone. For those of you whom I don’t know, my name is Jim Maynard, and I’m the Assistant Curator in the Poetry Collection here at UB. What I’ve just handed out is a list of the online and print resources that I’ll be mentioning, which is a list that Beth Adelman and I prepared for the Scholarly Communications toolkit on the UB Libraries staffweb, and also a copy of Peter Hirtle’s FAIR USE checklist, which we’ll look at shortly. Let me say at the outset that if you have any feedback or questions that I don’t have a chance to answer this morning, or that you’d rather ask privately, please feel free to email me at my buffalo address.

NCTM Curriculum Focal Points and State Standards

Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum Barbara Reys, University of Missouri Glenda and I would like talk with you about the status of mathematics curriculum articulation in the U.S. As you may know, the governance for what students are expected to learn has shifted in the past few years, largely in response to NCLB mandates. These changes have implications for the work of teacher educators. In this session we’ll review the “intended” curriculum as represented in state curriuclum standards. We’ll also share some recently proposed legislation calling for “American” standards in mathematics and science. Finally, we’ll ask you, as teacher educators, to think about your role in discussions of curriculum at the local, state and national level.

There were variations in the degree of teacher fidelity to the WIRC intervention. Classrooms were classified as high, medium, and low fidelity according to observations of the following elements: (1) Students work on thinksheets about their reading, (2) Students collaborate while drafting writing on thinksheets, and (3) Students work on tasks in socially mediated ways then proceed to similar tasks independently. Adjusting for these variations revealed a statistically significant advantage in reading comprehension measures for grade 5 experimental students (effect size = .23 for MC and .31 for CR). Grade 4 experimental students also improved more than control students, but not at a statistically significant level (effect size = .05 for MC and .22 for CR). Gains for constructed response items were slightly better than multiple choice items, which suggests greater benefits of the intervention for students when their reading comprehension is assessed through writing: The study is still underway and it is cautioned that any reported effects should not be interpreted as final indicators of success or failure of the WIRC intervention.
