(San Diego State University)

San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system. It is the third-oldest university in the California State University system, and one of the oldest universities in California. SDSU has a student body of approximately 29,256 (as of the beginning of the Fall 2009 academic year) and an alumni base of more than 200,000. San Diego State University had an acceptance rate of 31.2 % for the 2008 academic year. According to SDSU's website, the university received 62,000 applications for the 2008 school year.

W.M. Keck Foundation CMolS

The W.M. Keck Foundation Center for Molecular Structure (CMolS) is the first comprehensive x-ray crystallographic and computational facility located at a predominantly undergraduate institution. CMolS is a core research and education facility that provides students and faculty throughout the 23-campus California State University the opportunity for joint research and education activities directed at the determination and critical analysis of molecular structures. California State University Fullerton (CSUF) is the fifth largest of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located close to major academic, industrial and biomedical research development centers, it has grown to become a major comprehensive university, the largest in Orange County. CMolS earned external funding in three phases, beginning in 1994. With funding from NSF-ILI (DUE-9451978), Phase 1, a joint computational laboratory with the Department of Physics, was initiated. A state funded, permanent systems administrator, Brad Van Mourik, staffs the computational facility. In Phase2, subsequent funding from NSF-ARI (DBI-9413955) completed the computational facility and purchased the first of two x-ray diffraction systems, configured for primarily macromolecular structure determination. Phase 3, a second x-ray diffraction system dedicated to small molecule structure determination, was funded with a $250,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation in 1996. The completed x-ray diffraction laboratory consi...
