STEM SPEAKER SERIES DATE: Thursday, February 26, 2009 TIME: 11:45-1:00pm LOCATION: Academic Bldg Room 121 Pizza & Drinks Provided   “No man can hit a baseball that far” claimed Mo Vaughn former Red Sox all star first baseman. Jerry Remy, former Sox 2nd baseman and current broadcaster, and Trot Nixon, former Sox right fielder, concur. So does almost everyone who has looked at that seat from the vantage point of home plate, or looked at home plate from that seat. They are all talking about Seat 21, Row 37, Section 42—514 feet from home plate—the one red seat in a sea of green in the right field bleachers of Fenway Park. This is the alleged landing spot of Ted Williams’ June 9, 1946 home run off of a change-up thrown by Detroit Tiger Fred Hutchinson. The six daily papers in Boston in that era all covered the game that day, and all at least mentioned that home run. But, they gave widely varying estimates of where the ball landed. Our question today, over 60 years later, is what can physics tell us about that home run? What is reasonable, what is possible, what is likely, and why has nobody, not Big Papi, and not anyone, even in batting practice, ever come close to reaching that Red Seat?     Ted Williams, Big Papi, and the Physics of Fenway's Longest Homerun Matthew Koss, PhD Associate Professor of Physics College of the Holy Cross

STEM SPEAKER SERIES DATE: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 TIME: 11:45-1:00pm LOCATION: Academic Bldg Room 121 Pizza & Drinks Provided25 Many fundamental cellular processes are governed by genetic programs which employ protein-DNA interactions in regulating function. Owing to recent technological advances, it is now possible to design synthetic gene regulatory networks, and the stage is set for the notion of engineered cellular control at the DNA level. In this talk, we describe how techniques from nonlinear dynamics and molecular biology can be utilized to model, design and construct synthetic gene regulatory networks. "Working in a Team-Oriented Research Environment Following the Success of Toyota"

"Working in a Team-Oriented Research Environment Following the Success of Toyota"

Today's lab animal care workspace mirrors recent evolution in biomedical research by being more complex, expensive, and potentially hazardous. However the standard approach to organizational structure and workforce development remains unchanged. Toyota Production System (TPS) perfected by the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Inc. has revolutionized how many commercial products are made, resulting in the highest quality at reasonable costs in many sectors in addition to automobile manufacturing. More recently, non-manufacturing industries like banking, insurance, and healthcare are using TPS with the goal of providing defect-free services on time, every time, and only at the level needed. Through the establishment of multi-functional teams with work responsibilities that include husbandry, initial health assessment and basic veterinary care, operational maintenance, and research services, you can create a employment opportunity that produces high quality care and research support in an environment that is stimulating and rewarding for the individual employee.
