The Buckminster Fuller Institute: A Web Design Critique Zaakea Al-Barati, Keitha Hart, Anne-Marie Viola, Corina Waggoner LIS 654

Michal Rovner, Outside #3, 1990 The work of Israeli photographer and Installation artist, Michal Rovner, illustrates some significant differences between our Western view of photography, and that of Israel’s. As demonstrated by the image you see here, from her Outside series of 1990, her work is unusual in its simplicity and intentional lack of clarity. It is this indistinctness on which I would like to focus; since it’s quite unlike anything we are accustomed to seeing in the West. I would argue this unique approach is born of certain cultural mores, which have strongly influenced the development of Israeli visual culture. Also—and perhaps due to these traditions—I believe the course of Israeli photography has led to an entirely different perception of the camera’s lens, and the nature of the images derived from it. Though Michal Rovner does not consider herself in line with what one imagines an Israeli artist to be—nor is she satisfied with the term ‘photography’ as descriptive of her work—it remains useful to keep these terms in mind when considering her work’s influence.
