‘Data Capture and Presentation Techniques in Support of the EU Environmental Noise Directive ’ Thursday 23rd November 2006 at 4.00pm in Hume Building Conference Room, Third Floor Gearóid O’Riain is Director of Compass Informatics Ltd., a consultancy based in Dublin specialising in spatial data and information management applications. Seminar by Gearóid Ó Riain Check http://ncg.nuim.ie/ for details View more information on his research at http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/people/m.birkin/ ABSTRACT  Arising from the requirements of the EU Environmental Noise Directive (END) (2002/49/EC), an on-going project supported by the Environmental Protection Agency, Ireland, is furthering the development of advanced spatial video and photography capture and integration, along with interactive display of noise maps and spatial imagery. Data gaps have been identified that are to be filled to fully meet the road-related noise modeling and mapping requirements under the Directive. The techniques under development will allow the efficient vehicle- and air-based survey of roadways and the buffer zone, and the extraction of features from the derived ground and aerial imagery. An additional weakness is the lack of dissemination systems to present noise maps and action plans to the public and professional user alike, and that can also integrate the project s spatial and aerial imagery. A demonstration system and procedures for providing web-based public information systems are being deve...

“Incorporating Spatial Proximity in Cluster Analysis” This presentation outlines findings from research that focused on incorporating spatial proximity measures within a traditional cluster analysis-based segmentation to produce geographically contiguous and homogeneous regions.  Written in R, an open source statistical package, spatial proximity was incorporated within the k-means function.  To illustrate the usefulness of an algorithm that trades off group homogeneity and the geographical compactness of groups, its use in developing telephone book territories for Yellow Pages Canada will be discussed. Seminar by Dr. Philip Bermingham Thursday 9th August 2007 @ 4pm Conference Room Check http://ncg.nuim.ie/ for details Dr. Philip Bermingham is a Senior Analyst at Environics Analytics, a leading edge consulting firm head officed in Toronto.  As a member of the Product Development and Custom Analytics Team, he develops custom models and creative solutions for EA's clients.  Prior to joining Environics he worked as Senior Analyst at the Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity (CSCA), Ryerson University and within the business GIS industry. Philip holds a Masters degree from the Joint Program in Spatial Analysis at Ryerson University and University of Toronto. His areas of specialism include applied GIS and spatial modeling, statistics and programming.

“The changing face of applied GI science in the UK: a consultancy perspective” Wednesday 4th Oct 2006 at 4.00pm in Hume Building Conference Room, Third Floor As GI Scientists, we are always telling people about how powerful our methods and techniques are, and how they can transform the way in which people look at the world and make decisions. While this may be self evident to us, why is it that the use of GI in the UK has been confined mostly to central and local government, the big four retailers, and utility companies? What has happened to the big bang the industry has been promising in the UK for the last 10 years? Mark Thurstain-Goodwin, Managing Director of Geofutures, a GI practice based in Bath, sheds lights on why this is the case and drawing on examples of his work at Geofutures, he will argue that things are finally changing. However, this change may be more radical than we think and will require a complete redefinition of the way in which we do our work. ‘Kyoto Virtual Time-Space’ Monday 21st August 2006 at 4.00pm in Hume Building Conference Room, Third Floor Prof. Keiji Yano is a member of Department of Geography at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto (Japan). His research interests include urban modelling, spatial analysis and GIS, retailing, migration, virtual cities. This presentation describes research which integrates GIS and virtual reality (VR) technologies to develop a 4D GIS, "Kyoto Virtual Time-Space," which allows virtual travel over space and time in the Japanese historical city of Kyoto. It comprises urban landscapes from the present, the 20th to 17th centuries, and the Heian period (12th to 8th centuries, when Kyoto was founded) based on available historical documents, maps and other information. Locations are identified on 2D GIS, 3D VR techniques visualize the urban landscapes, and several time slices created form the 4D GIS. “Multi-scale spatio-temporal modeling, analyzing and reasoning” Tuesday 22nd August 2006 at 4.00pm in Hume Building Conference Room, Third Floor Dr. Tao Cheng obtained her PhD in GIS from the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC). She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Chinese university of Hong Kong (1999 – 2000) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2003- 2005), a lecturer in the university of Leicester (2001 – 2002) and a part-time lecturer in Hong Kong University (2002-2003). She is currently a lecturer in Department of Geomatic Engineering, University College London. Her research interests span uncertainty in geographic information, spatio-temporal data model, multi-scale modeling and representing of spatial objects, and spatial data mining, with applications on intelligent transportation, coastal zone monitoring, epidemic disease transmission and forest fire prevention. She has over 70 publications and one on fuzzy spatial objects received The U. V. Helava Award for the Best Paper in the ISPRS Journal of Phogrammetry and Remote Sensing in the year 2000 from the international Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS).
