Evidence Based Practice: Unit I Introduction Mount St. Mary’s College Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Faculty Online Instruction

Welcome to the online faculty development course in Evidence Based Practice. The core faculty of Mt. St. Mary’s College, Doctor of Physical Therapy Program hope that you will find this course useful as you develop and revise your courses. We also hope that you will this course helpful in your day to day clinical practice. Your feedback regarding how to make the course better is very much appreciated. Since the beginning of the American Physical Therapy Association in the 20’s and more realistically in the 50’s and the inception of the journal in the 60’s, we have been challenged to base our clinical practice on something deeper than intuition. The demand that our practice should have scientific merit has been a part of our practice since the inception of the Bachelor's degree program in the 60’s. We’ve not necessarily lived up to these challenges. In fact, some might say that we have too easily embraced the latest, trendiest treatment approaches without regard to the theoretical foundation or supporting evidence. The leaders of the profession, all scholars over the years have asserted that we need to consider solid research when selecting treatment approaches.

Evidence Based Practice: Unit II Asking and Answering Clinical Questions: Intervention Mount St. Mary’s College Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Faculty Online Instruction

In Unit I you were introduced to the models of EBP as they apply to physical therapy. You were exposed to the process by which you can ask a focused question about a patient problem, translate that question into a search of a scholarly research database, retrieve relevant research and critique the literature. In Unit II, we will take you through that process in more depth for the various aspects of patient care that we should consult the literature. We will apply the process to the following areas: Diagnosis (Tests and Measures) Prognosis (Setting appropriate Goals) Interventions (finding the best treatments) You will find that there are three separate Power Point presentations in this unit, one devoted to each of the above topics. Each topic is presented in parallel format with the first several slides being nearly identical. You should find that the process by which one asks answerable questions, searches and retrieves evidence and finally critically appraises the research that you’ve retrieved are quite similar. In each topic, I use a patient case scenario to guide our discussion. It is my hope that you will be able to model this behavior with your students in the courses that you teach. A valuable resource that the Physical Therapy journal provides is the column, Evidence in Practice. In this column, the authors address a clinical problem and model how to search for an answer and apply it to a specific case. You will find some of these cases demonstrated in...
