Millikin University

Millikin University is an American co-educational, comprehensive, independent, 4-year university, with traditional undergraduate programs in Arts & Sciences, Business, Fine Arts, and Professional Studies, as well as non-traditional, adult degree-completion programs (PACE) and graduate programs in Business Administration and Nursing. Millikin's campus is in Decatur, Illinois and serves approximately 2,400 students with student/faculty ratio of 11.6 to 1 and an average class size of 21 students. Founded in 1901 by James Millikin, a prominent Decatur businessman, it is historically affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). That affiliation no longer exists.

Welcome (for the hundredth time?) to Millikin University. My name… Today and tomorrow are a “mini-boot camp” of the brain. The goal is to give you a taste of university level thinking. To get your circuits active. To stretch your brains (an initial warm up) so that you will have some understanding of what is gong to be expected of you at the university level. There are three “large sessions” that I will be leading. In these sessions, what I want you to do is “think” with me as we go through the material. In these sessions, I’ll be making some presentations based loosely off the materials that were sent to you over the summer. If you did not receive those materials, see me at some point; I have extra copies. Don’t worry about taking notes. I will make these power points available to you by posting them on the University Seminar website. Some of what I will be saying (especially in the first half of this presentation) will likely strike some of you (perhaps even most of you) as odd, off the wall, down right crazy, or some sort of “pie in the sky” fantasy. Some of you will likely be tempted to neutralize what I say by thinking “It’s just that ivory tower bullshit.” I fully understand that in advance. Nevertheless, I am going to say it. I make no assumptions that my colleagues (including your seminar instructors) would endorse everything that I say in these presentations. They may have objections. You may have objections.
