GEOS 254: INTRODUCTION

Petrological microscopes are used to: (a) identify the minerals present (b) determine the microstructure These data are then used to classify the rock and infer the history of the rock (e.g. has the rock been deformed? Did the deformation occur before, during or after the growth of the minerals?)

Solid-State Microstructures

Solid-State Microstructures

Metamorphic rocks form the minerals that have the stable lowest energy paragenesis under the conditions of formation & generally also have microstructures that minimise the excess energy associated with the grain boundaries. The energy differences involved in the reactions are >>> than those that generate the types of grain boundaries. Grain boundary energy reduction is accomplished by either reducing the total area of grain boundaries and/or forming grain boundaries that have minimal excess energy (most atoms are bonded “correctly”).

The following slides and notes have been prepared as a guide to preparing your presentation for the Postgraduate Research Festival. You might like to use the slides as templates or design your own from scratch. You may also find it helpful to ask your supervisor for feedback on the form and content of your presentation. External students unable to attend the Festival in person are required to submit an e-presentation i.e. a PowerPoint presentation submitted via e-mail. The presentation will be made available for viewing throughout the Festival. Overview
