Ithaca College

Ithaca College is a private college located on the South Hill of Ithaca, New York. The school was founded by William Egbert in 1892 as a conservatory of music. The college has a strong liberal arts core, but also offers several pre-professional programs and some graduate programs. The college is also known internationally for its communications program. The college is at the center of a sophisticated cultural community, with a backdrop of Cayuga Lake, Cornell University, and hundreds of waterfalls and gorges. The college is perhaps best known for its large list of alumni who play or have played substantial roles in the world of broadcasting. The college has been ranked among the top ten master's universities in the North by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1996. For the 2009 rankings, the college was ranked 7 in this category.

Mating Behavior in the Endangered Sonoran Topminnow: Speciation in Action C.R. Hurt, S. Stears-Ellis, K. Hughes and P.W. Hedrick Poster created by: Isabel Preeshagul

Main Question : Has geographic isolation caused these two allopatric species to exhibit assortative mating, an early stage of reproductive isolation? Background: Top Minnows are small, live-bearing fish that prefer shallow warm waters. Their population has been declining since the late 1800’s due to lack of water sources in the southwest U.S.A. This experiment deals with 2 different species of topminnows: Poeciliopsis occidentalis and Poecilipsis sonoriensis, (P.O, P.S.). Originating in Arizona, the P.O and P.S. were thought to be the same species at first due to their morphological similarities. However, it was proven that only 2 out of the 25 microsatellite alleles at 7 loci in the P.O topminnow were found in the P.S topminnow. This evidence shows that they have been long isolated, and should be considered different species. So, the question arises: has this geographic isolation led to pre-mating barriers between the two species that cause different mating preferences? Figure 2: Male and female P.S. Male is on top and female is on bottom. Hypothesis: The geographic isolation of these 2 species has led to an early stage of pre-mating reproductive isolation where each species prefers a mate that is con-specific rather than hetero-specific. This means that they prefer to mate within their own species. Here are 3 possible reasons for this: 1.) since these 2 species are allopatric, overtime, evolution caused the 2 species to change physically in such a way that it was imp...

The building uses a geothermal heating and cooling system called a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), or GeoExchange. The word geothermal comes from the Greek geo, meaning earth, and therme, meaning heat. So, geothermal systems use heat from the earth. This type of system uses the earth’s relatively constant temperature of around 50º F to heat and cool a building. Instead of creating heat like a conventional fossil fuel furnace or boiler does, a GeoExchange system simply moves heat around. In the winter when the ground is warmer than the air, the ground is used as a heat source. In the summer when the ground is cooler than the air, it is used as a heat sink. Underneath the plaza of the PRW Center, there are 500 thirty-six foot deep wells. In the winter, a water and coolant solution is circulated through these wells to gather heat from the ground. This heat is then used to warm a liquid refrigerant that circulates throughout the building to heat it. In the summer, the process is reversed to take the heat out of the building and put it into the ground. Caitlin Ahearn 2009 How Does the Peggy Ryan Williams Center Heat and Cool Itself? The Peggy Ryan Williams Center, as seen from the front. Photo from www.chronicle.com This diagram shows the cycle of a Ground Source Heat Pump in heating mode. The heat source in this picture is the Earth, and the heat sink is the building. In cooling mode, the process is reversed. The medium in the pump is a refrigerant that has a low bo...
Utilitarianism

Utilitarianism

Utilitarianism = the doctrine that the supreme principle of morality is “the utility principle.” Definition: The utility of act A = the amount of happiness act A causes those affected by it minus the amount of unhappiness act A causes those affected by it. The Utility Principle For any act A, A is morally right if and only if A maximizes utility—that is, no other act the agent could have done has higher utility than A.
