How Should We Live? By Stu Dent Immanuel Kant stated that to live morally, humans must obey the categorical imperative: act as if everyone could act in the same way; do nothing that you would criticize in others. Applying this principle to one’s life presents a number of challenges. For example, Americans consume far more than our fair share of natural resources. If people in developing countries consumed natural resources at our rate, the world’s resources would quickly be exhausted. To live in a manner that all people could live, we must examine the resources we consume. Is it responsible to drive vehicles that consume more gasoline per capita than an entire village would consume in the developing world? Are we entitled to squander the earth’s resources because we got to them first? My answer is no. The categorical imperative demands that we act as responsible stewards to the earth’s resources, insuring that not only other nations but also our own descendants will have the resources that we enjoy today. The images at the right are designed to illustrate the effect that large SUVs have on natural resources. In these images, a Hummer is squeezing the oil out of the world.
