3. The Resonant Chamber The resonant frequency of the chamber is dependent on many factors. Here VW is the speed of sound in water, which varies with temperature, but can be considered stable for our purposes. The NX, NY, and NZ are the number of nodes in the given direction. For all horizontal directions we only need one node, but for this experiment we chose a vertical 2 anti-node system for future studies on multi-bubble SL. The LX, LY and LZ are the dimensions of the box. LX and LY can be chosen arbitrarily as long as they are equal. With the frequency already determined, LZ can then be solved for. Because this value corresponds to the water height, the box must be a couple centimeters higher. 4. The Circuit Board The electrical circuit is relatively simple. The PZT acts like a capacitor, which means that an inductor must be used in order to cancel the impedance of the PZT. Here C is the capacitance rating for the PZT (700 pF for our type of PZT). The inductance L, can then be solved for and integrated into the system (about 82mH). A variable inductor was used to fine tune the system in order to maximize the voltage across the PZT. 2. The Ultra-Sonic Horn The ultra-sonic horn’s resonant frequency is dependent on the type of material its made of and the length of the rod itself. Here VM is the speed of sound in the type of metal used. The speed of sound in any metal may vary slightly depending on the type of alloy and cut, therefore it was necessary to ex...

Not “regurgitation” of class discussion topics: “Discuss the court’s decision in Hamer v. Sidway and its impact on the doctine of consideration.” Generally not pure “policy” questions related to policy discussions held in class: “Discuss the doctrine of consideration and the advantages and disadvantages of using consideration to determine which promises to enforce.” Not pure “knowledge” questions: “What is consideration?” Not even direct questions: “Does consideration exist in the following situation.”

Determining the lifetime of Ortho-Positronium (o-Ps) in Neon Gas 1. What is a positron and where do you find them? Commonly created during Beta+ radioactive decay, positrons are identical in size and mass to electrons but with oppositely signed charge. In Beta+ decay, a proton is converted into a neutron while a positron and neutrinos are emitted. When positrons interact with normal matter, they experience a strong coulomb attraction, collide with electrons resulting in the annihilation of both the positron and electron. The annihilation results in the emission of at least two gamma rays1, with energies from 0 to 511keV2, to conserve energy and momentum1. 4. How to determine the lifetime of Ortho-Positronium Once the excited neon is created it quickly (3.7 ps2) falls into its ground state, giving off a 1.27MeV photon that signals the creation of a positron and subsequently positronium1. The positronium exists until the coulomb attraction overtakes the orbiting paths and the two particles collide emitting more high energy photons (in the case of o-Ps an odd number of photons, greater than one, are emitted)1. These photons signal the destruction of positronium. The measurement of positronium lifetime is now reduced to detecting and measuring the time difference between two similar signals. Scintillation crystals (gamma detectors) in combination with a fast coincidence timing system make this possible. 3. Na-22 Energy Spectrum The energy spectrum of Na-22 shows two d...
