Remain silent and write on index card: 1. As the “game” progressed, how or what were you feeling? How did you interpret others’ behaviors? What can you learn about yourself from this activity? How does this “game” illustrate the difficulties interacting with those in different groups? How does this game illustrate the complexity of culture? Debriefing notes are provided with the simulation. I like to debrief at two levels: how they felt and what they thought was occurring. To do this, first I ask people to remain silent and invite each to write answers to three questions on the 3x5 card provided: How or what were you feeling? How did you interpret the behavior of others? What can you learn about yourself from this activity? After they have written their answers on the cards, then people are allowed to talk to each other at the table about what they experienced (the volume in the room rises dramatically). After they have talked for 5–6 minutes, call to order and tell students: This game was not about winning; it’s about how you play the game. Specifically it is about how each of us reacted when we thought the cultural rules were the same and they were not. Things each person should think about: how did you behave? What did you feel? What did you assume about others?

Some of these questions require students to obtain position and time data from images. A simple image analysis tool can be used with these questions.
