Sharing Millennium This presentation was intended to be a joint presentation with Shane White, the Systems Librarian) from WA Dept of Health, but unfortunately Shane wasn’t able to make it to AIUG this year - so whilst this will be mainly from State Library’s perspective, I will try and give a little of Health’s view. Last year State Library of WA embarked on project to share our Millennium system with the WA Dept of Health. Why? During 2008, both the State Library and the WA Department of Health investigated the need for a new library management system. Health, because support for their current system was to cease, and State Library because of a State Government requirement to go to market for a replacement system. In April, State Library met with the State Supply Commission and the Department of Treasury & Finance and it was agreed that it wasn’t practical for us to purchase a new system at that time. It was also recommended that the nine Dept of Health libraries enter into a shared arrangement with the State Library. Essentially this was intended to reduce costs, but it was also thought a collaborative approach to sharing a system would help improve service delivery for the clients of both organisations, and bring together a broader range of skills and expertise. This afternoon I hope to give an insight into our experiences of moving into a shared environment and what we have achieved.
