Thursday, November 11th, 2010 20.00 h Location: Aula, Academy Building, Broerstraat 5, Groningen zernike institute for advanced materials ZERNIKE CHAIR LECTURE 2010 The Zernike Chair is an honorary professorship, awarded once every year by the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, to a world-class scientist. The power of one: what can we learn from looking at single molecules? Summary: Optical spectroscopy at the ultimate limit of a single molecule has grown over the past years into a powerful technique for exploring the individual nano-scale behaviour of molecules in complex local environments. Observing a single molecule removes the usual ensemble average, allowing the exploration of hidden heterogeneity in complex condensed phases as well as direct observation of dynamic changes, without synchronization. In this lecture, a short overview of the wide variety of topics that have been addressed to date with single-molecule spectroscopy will be presented. Topics range from single-molecule-based breaking of physical laws over enzyme catalysts and chemical transformations on industrial catalysts to studies of polymer dynamics. All are welcome. The lecture will be given in English and will be followed by an informal reception in honour of Prof. Hofkens. The Holder of the Zernike Chair 2010, Professor Johan Hofkens of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, will present a public lecture:
