The Principal-Library Team Dynamic… Powerful partnerships forging information literate school communities

Lyn Hay School of Information Studies Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga, NSW Abstract This keynote explores the concept of an information literate school community, and how teacher librarians and principals can work as a team to ensure the development of an effective library and information service to support learning outcomes. In recent years, a number of research studies have provided evidence that effective school libraries do make a difference – having a positive impact on student achievement. Best practice has also shown that information and ICT literacy outcomes can be effectively integrated across key learning areas and year levels with the leadership of the teacher librarian. The importance of principal support in actualising these teaching and leadership roles of the teacher librarian is crucial for success, and an effective principal-TL dynamic is at the core of developing a powerful partnership. The principal can be a powerful ally to TLs, and TLs should expect the support of his/her principal. TLs and principals need to work together to define their role in developing their school into one that clearly exhibits qualities and characteristics of an information literate school community. This plenary considers the findings of an international study of the principals’ role in developing and supporting information literacy programs in schools, highlights key factors that contribute to a powerful principal-TL partnership, and presents a rubric that can assist schools in determining their progress towards the development of an information lite...
