Bath Spa University is a university based in, and around, Bath, England. The institution has previously been known as Bath College of Higher Education, and Bath Spa University College, and was upgraded to full university status in August 2005.

The 1990s

The 1990s

1.End of the Reagan/Thatcher era. Start of Clinton era in US. Thatcher removed but in 1992 Major unexpectedly wins again for the Tories. 2. Late 80s saw the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet system and of communism in the former Eastern Block. Great problems to follow in the former Yugoslavia. 3. Gradually the East turns towards the market economy model (China, India, etc), though Japan is no longer economically so successful. 4. Problems with the over dominance of Western Capitalism. In Africa and the thrid world debts to the West and World Bank escalate. 5. Aids becomes a world-wide problem particularly in Africa.

North America like South America has musical traditions that originate with: 1. Amerindian ethnic groups 2. European ethic groups 3. Black African and Creole groups All intermix and none have remained unaffected by the others. It is arguable that the mixing of black African and European has produce in jazz and blues the most universal musical idiom on earth today – it being the basis of western popular music Amerindian is the least known, least understood and least influential. Much of it dying with the loss of land and identity as the white man took over North America

Week 9: Australia and Aboriginal Music

1. Australian Aborigines arrived 40,000 years ago and developed a stable society with complex cultural traditions. 2. Aspects of culture have survived colonization but few still live in the traditional way. 3. Aboriginal culture has been greatly affected and has in many cases changed to conform to existence with whites.
Performance Practice – Performance as Discipline 1.There is now some 1,000 years of notated music in the Western Art Tradition. 2. But for the music to be brought to life as the composer intended we need to go beyond the written message. 3. It is this interpretation of tradition, or lack of it, that constitutes performance practice 4. Has developed as an important subject area with its own literature in the last 100 years.
