Agenda: Server ManagerAgendaServer Manager0 Now let’s take an in-depth look at Server Manager, including Server Manager Wizards and configuring roles with Server Manager. We will also explore the different elements of the Server Manager interface. Server Manager in Windows Server 2008 provides a single source for managing a server's identity and system information, displaying server status, identifying problems with server role configuration, and managing all roles installed on the server.

Server Manager FeaturesServer Manager, Windows Server 2008, Role wizards, Role Management home pages, RSATServer Manager in windows 2008 improves the ability to manage server roles.0 To accomplish the management of these roles, Server Manager functionality incorporates more snap-in extensions from Computer Manager, such as Reliability and Performance, and Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. These snap-ins are always available from within Server Manager, regardless of which roles, if any, are installed on the computer. For several roles, Server Manager has the ability to display notifications, or messages shown at the top of the role management home pages, when constraints in the models are violated within the most recent 24 hours. The notifications are linked to Help topics that provide details about the message. These Help topics might link to additional content, solutions, tools, or other UI for fixing the problem. Role management home pages for the following roles can display notifications: Print Services and Active Directory® Lightweight Directory Services. Role home pages provide a high-level view of the status of each role. Tools on the role management home page allow you to filter events displayed in the Summary area, and set preferences for Windows system services that are required by the role. Server Manager provides a feature, Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT), which enables remote management of specific roles, role services, and features on computers running Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 from a computer running Windows Server 2008. RSAT can be installed by using Server Manager’s Add Features Wizard on a computer running Windows Server 2008. A list of management tools for other roles and features is available within RSAT in the Add Features Wizard. A new command-line feature in Server Manager provides a feature to support scripting and automatic or unattended deployment of Windows Server 2008 roles: the Server Manager command-line tool, ServerManagerCmd.exe. This command-line tool allows you to perform certain Server Manager tasks outside of the Windows GUI, such as installation or removal of roles, role services, and features, command validation, and querying the current state of the computer. In addition, ServerManagerCmd.exe allows for installation or removal of multiple roles, role services or features in a single command instance by using XML answer files. Working with Windows Server 2008 doesn’t require a drastic reworking of your network infrastructure. The Server Manager Console is there to assist you in this effort.http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/18dd1257-2cd
Server Manager Console File Server Active Directory Print Server Server Roles
Server Manager ConsoleServer Manager, administration, DNS, DHCP, Print ServerServer Manager is a new, integrated Microsoft Management Console (MMC) that offers a seamless, integrated management experience.0 The Server Manager in Windows Server 2008 guides administrators through the process of installing, configuring, and managing server roles and features that are part of Windows Server 2008. In Windows Server 2008, a server role describes the primary function of the server. In short, the Server Manager provides a single point for managing a server. The Server Manager console uses integrated wizards to step the user through adding server roles. You can use Server Manager to add several roles at once, even if they are unrelated. For example, a server being provisioned for a branch office could have the DNS Server, DHCP Server, and Print Server roles added at once. The Server Manager Wizard performs all of the necessary dependency checks and conflict resolution so the server is stable, reliable, and secure. The Server Manager can also be used as a portal for regular ongoing server management. The Server Manager console reports on server status, exposes key management tasks, and guides administrators to advanced management tools. A key component of the Server Manager is the server role home pages. These pages provide an integrated view of serve

Similarly, it checks that none are removed that might still be required by the remaining roles. Server Manager replaces several features included with Windows Server 2003, including Manage Your Server, Configure Your Server, and Add or Remove Windows Components. Dependency checks were often limited, and the available tools limited administrators to the installation of only one role at a time. Before you could add more roles, installation of each role had to complete. The Server Manager offers you a collection of wizards that allow you to add, remove, or augment multiple roles in a single session. Roles are configured with recommended security settings by default. It’s not necessary to run the Security Configuration Wizard after role installation unless something specific necessitates modifying security defaults. Roles are installed and operational after completing the Add Roles Wizard. All configurations exposed in the Add Roles Wizard are secure by default and have smart defaults optimized for the IT generalist. The Add Roles Wizard automatically chec

Review Server Manager Print Management File Management
Agenda: Print ManagerAgenda Print Manager0 There are two primary tools that you can use to administer a Windows print server in Windows Server® 2008: Server Manager and Print Management. You can use Server Manager to install the Print Services server role, optional role services, and features. Server Manager also displays print-related events from Event Viewer and includes an instance of the Print Management snap-in, which can administer the local server only. Print Management provides a single interface that administrators can use to efficiently administer multiple printers and print servers and is the primary focus of this document. You can use Print Management to manage printers on computers that are running Microsoft® Windows® 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server® 2003, Windows Vista®, or Windows Server 2008. Let’s examine the print services role of Windows Server 2008.

Print Services RolePrint Services Role, Windows Server 2008, Group PolicyThe Print Services role in the Windows Server® 2008 operating system includes two primary tools that you can use to administer a Windows® print server: Server Manager and Print Management. 0 Print Services enables you to share printers on a network and centralize print server and network printer management tasks by using the Print Management snap-in. Print Management helps you monitor print queues and receive notifications when print queues stop processing print jobs. It also enables you to migrate print servers and deploy printer connections by using Group Policy. Print Services have integrated ability to deploy printers by using Group Policy. You can use Print Management with Group Policy to automatically deploy printer connections to users or computers and install the appropriate printer drivers. This functionality is now included in client computers running Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008. Additionally, these operating systems can now receive per-user printer connections during background Group Policy refresh operations. With the print services role, you have import and export capabilities for print queues. You can use the Printer Migration Wizard or the Printbrm.exe command-line tool to export print queues, printer settings, printer ports, and language monitors,

In addition, Printer-driver packages are digitally signed printer drivers that install all the components of the driver to the driver store on client computers (if the server and the client computers are running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008). Additionally, using printer-driver packages on a print server that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 enables users who are not members of the local Administrators group to connect to the print server and install or receive updated printer drivers. Print Services has also made improvements on Printer filters in Print Management. In Print Management, filters display only those printers that meet a certain set of criteria. For example, it might be helpful to filter for printers with certain error conditions or those printers in a group of buildings regardless of the print server they use. Filters are stored in the Custom Printer Filters folder in the Print Management tree and are dynamic, so the data is always current. Filters are improved in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in two ways: • All Drivers custom filter. This is a new default filter that displays all drivers installed on the selected server, as well as the versions for the drivers. • Number of filter criteria increased to six. Increasing the number of filter criteria from three (the previous limit) allows you to create more specific filters. Lastly Print Services has improved Print Management performance. You can use it to install, view, and manage all of the printers and Windows print servers in your organization. Print Management saves the print administrator a significant amount of time installing printers on client computers and managing and monitoring printers. Tasks that can require up to 10 steps on individual computers now can be accomplished in 2 or 3 steps on multiple computers simultaneously and remotely. Print Management provides current details about the status of printers and print servers on the network. You can use Print Management to install printer connections to a group of client computers simultaneously and to monitor print queues remotely. Print Management can help you find printers that have an error condition by using filters. It can also send e-mail notifications or run scripts when a printer or print server needs attention. On printers that provide a Web-based management interface, Print Management can display more data, such as toner and paper levels. By using Print Management with Group Policy, you

Print Management PrerequisitesPrint Management Prerequisites, Windows Server 2008There are a few key prerequisites that must be in place prior to using Print Management on a Windows Server.0 To use Print Management on Windows Server 2008, you must install the print server role on the computer where you want to use Print Management. On computers running Windows Vista, the Print Management snap-in is automatically installed and available through Microsoft Management Console (MMC). To deploy printer connections by using Group Policy, your environment must meet the following requirements: • The Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) schema must use a Windows Server 2003 R2 or Windows Server 2008 schema version. • Client computers running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 must use the PushPrinterConnections.exe tool in a startup script (for per-computer connections) or in a logon script (for per-user connections). Along with general prerequisites print management also has some security prerequisites.http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/0ba8afd8-40fb-440a-8c95-4b3aebd219281033.mspx?mfr=true ‹#›

Print Management SecurityPrint Management Security, Windows Server 2008 There are also Security Requirements 0 To manage a remote print server, you must be a member of the Print Operators or Server Operators groups, or the local Administrators group on the remote print server. You do not need these credentials to monitor remote print servers, though some functionality will be disabled. To use Print Management (Printmanagement.msc) with Group Policy, you must be a member of the local Administrators group and have write access to Group Policy objects (GPOs) in the AD DS domain or the organizational unit (OU) to which you want to deploy printer connections. It is good practice for administrators to use an account with restrictive permissions to perform routine, non-administrative tasks and to use an account with broader permissions only when performing specific administrative tasks. Now let’s see how to manage and migrate printers in our next demonstration.http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/0ba8afd8-40fb-440a-8c95-4b3aebd219281033.mspx?mfr=true ‹#›
