Ethics Committee Procedures Structure - NUIM Ethics Committee Chaired by Vice President for Research Secretary – Research Support Office Set of representatives from various disciplines, Solicitor, Veterinarian, Lay person Ethics Committee has 2 subcommittees Biomedical Sciences (Biomedical (& Life) Sciences Research Ethics Sub Committee) Experimental studies on humans, human tissue or blood and animals Social Sciences (Social Sciences Research Ethics Sub Committee) Interviewing/studying or gathering information from human subjects

Ethics Committee Function Discuss ethical issues related to research and drafts policy as a result of these discussions Evaluate proposals for ethical approval Government agencies require approval for certain types of projects Project with humans and/or animals Handle allegations of Misconduct Manage conflicts of interest
