Overview of QCM 520/530 (this semester)

The main objective of this course is to equip student teachers with knowledge and craft skills relevant to teaching Secondary mathematics Course content includes Singapore Mathematics curriculum Learning theories Teaching approaches relevant to various math topics Pedagogical content knowledge Use of technology in teaching mathematics Lesson planning Designing worksheet and so on 4

Overview of QCM 521/531 (course straddles across practicum)

This course focuses on applying knowledge and crafts skills learnt in QCM 520/530 to conduct a microteaching segment Assessment and test construction Review of teaching practicum 5

Lectures & Tutorials for QCM 520/530

6 Academic Units i.e. 72 hours 1 face-to-face lecture per week. First lecture is on week starting 27 Feb 2012 3 two-hour tutorials per week. First tutorial session on week starting 27 Feb 2012. 6

Textbooks and other references

Textbook used for this course: Teaching Secondary School Mathematics: A Resource Book, Lee Peng Yee (Ed.) 2nd Edition (Updated) It is available in the NIE bookshop. In addition, the following resource books (also available in NIE bookshop) are highly recommended. Teaching Secondary School Mathematics: Techniques and Enrichment Units (7th Edition), Posamentier, et al Teaching Mathematics, A sourcebook of Aids, Activities and Strategies (3rd Edition), Sobel and Maletsky 8

Warning

The penalties for academic and professional misconduct can be severe. Misconduct includes, but is not limited to the following: 1. plagiarism 2. copying work from others 3. submitting the same (or almost the same) assignment to different modules without prior approval from the instructors 4. submitting fake medical certificates. 9

Warning

Submission of assignment: Assignments must be submitted by the deadline set and agreed upon. Early submission is allowed but re-submission is not permitted even before the deadline is up. Late submission must be accompanied by a letter addressed to Head/MME and the coordinator, explaining clearly the reasons. Head/MME and the coordinator will then discuss to decide whether or not the assignment will be accepted for grading. 10

On absence from classes

As these modules do not involve a final examination, if you are absent with (not to mention without, in which case there will be other penalties) valid reason, your tutor may assign additional work for you to do. This work will be assessed with appropriate adjustment made to your final grade. 12

Please prepare $2 for your tutor to collect in class.  This is for additional printing costs. 14

For whom? All PGDE (Sec) trainees who have Mathematics as one of their CS subjects (whether CS 1 or CS 2) Why SMMT? To better prepare teachers to teach secondary school mathematics 17

How many attempts? Three attempts. The first attempt will be held on 25 Feb 2012 (0930 to 1130 hrs). Students who do not manage to clear the first attempt are required to sit SMMT second attempt in Jan / Feb 2012. The third attempt will be held in May 2012, only for those who have not managed to clear by the second attempt. 18

What is the content of the SMMT? O-Level Mathematics. For PGDE(All Sec), both E Maths and A Maths content; For PGDE (Lower Sec), the entire Maths content All PGDE(JC) student teachers taking Maths as CS1 are required to sit the same SMMT paper as PGDE (All Sec) group. 19

Are there any available help to prepare SMMT? Trainee teachers are expected to be well-versed in O-Level Mathematics. The website math.nie.edu.sg/pgde/smmt.html will provide useful material. 20
