The original photo

For this assignment I chose one of my own photos and opened it in Photoshop. Then the image can be croped by using the crop tool, but I didn’t need to use it in my photo. The image did not need any rotation either. Instead I checked the Image Size dialog box (Image > Image Size) and I changed the size. I changed the image size just to make it a bit closer to standard photos, but the difference is barely noticeable. I changed the height to 4 inches then the width was changed to 5,333 and number of resolution to 486. I decreased the numbers but the amount of pixels still is the same.

Exercise 01

Exercise 02

To change the image to grayscale I chose Image > Mode > Grayscale and then converted the picture from RGB color mode to grayscale. Then I chose Windows > Histogram and opened the histogram tab on Photoshop. I tried to read and understand the histogram, it is key. Most of the information is in the middle and on the left of the scale.

Exercise 03

I clicked on Image > Adjustments > Levels and adjusted the tonal range of my image. The Levels dialog box displays the histogram from previous exercise. I adjusted the contrast of the image by moving the slider. I changed the gray input values to 17> 1,16 > 244. Personally I think that this made the picture clearer and more balenced, but one can play with the numbers more if desired because it is up to the eye of the beholder to judge that fact.

Exercise 04

I go back to my original photo and look at the histogram agian. This time I clicked all channels on it. Now I can see the histogram of RGB colors separatly. I observe all RGB colors and their information. I can see that the blue color has less information on the left and more on the right. The graph of the x-axis shows the information. I clicked on the Image > Adjustments > Curves and I did this in order to see the information of shadows, highlights etc. I chose the color red and adjusted the slider that goes from left to right. And I did the same with the color green and the color blue. I adjusted input values to the following ; red= 4, green = 11 and blue = 13. This made and gave the picture more contrast and the histogram change. The information on the histograms last from left to right but include white gaps. The modifications are minimal though.

Exercise 05

For this exercise I clicked on Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. The Saturation and Lightness sliders modify the image. I made some changes in ordet to make colors more flowing and natural in a way. On the pull-down menu you can chose if you want to change master, or the reds, yellows, greens, cyans, blues or magentas. I chose to work with master. I changed the following. Hue: 0 Saturation: + 10 Lightness: -10

Exercise 06

For this exercise I clicked on Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask The tool unsharp mask was applied to the following values; Amount 45% Radius 2, 5 pixels, Threshold 0 levels. The affects really aren’t so obvious, they are minor but the image is sharpen.
