Where is Kathmandu?
HERE!
The Excelsior School is an English medium co-educational institution with the motto of hard work and honour.
Subjects like English, Nepali, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Environment, Population and Health (E. P. H.) and Optional Mathematics and Computer Science are compulsory for all students.
The students who board follow a fixed time table on all days of the week. Their day begins at 5:30 a.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. Study classes are held in the morning and evenings.
The school has a well equipped library, as well as a computer laboratory and science laboratories.
WHY THE SCHOOL USES ENGLISH
English is the medium of instruction, as fluent English is usually a basic requirement for admission to centres of higher education. It gives access to modern knowledge not readily available in Nepal.
English is the language of diplomacy and it contains many a rich literary treasure; it gives the pupils an introduction to western thought and culture.
Beside English which is the medium of instruction, the school emphasises Nepali. Nepali is the national language and so is given its due importance. Certain subjects such as social sciences and Nepali are taught in Nepali. Many co-curricular activities are also done in Nepali.
What’s the Project?
Pupils in both schools will complete the same project;
‘How Religion Affects My Life’.
However you like!
Could be:
PowerPoint
Video
Leaflet
Essay
Song
All of the above!
How Long Have I Got?
Until your first RE lesson in module 4
Christmas holidays (may be a good time to take some photos or gather some resources?)
Every RE homework during module 3
February half term (for finishing off)
This is a LONG TIME. Your work needs to look like it had this long spent on it!
Why Are We Doing This?
The Excelsior School pupils are completing the same project
We will be sending a selection of your projects to Kathmandu to show pupils there how the lives of people their own age in England are affected by religion.
They will send some of their work here so that we can learn in the same way.
According to the 2001 census, 80.6 percent of Nepalese are Hindu, 10.7 percent are Buddhist. You will be studying these religions for the rest of year 8 – you can learn a lot from these pupils!
But Religion DOESN’T Affect my Life!
NONSENSE!
Think about;
Our school year
The names of children in your class
What you study
Where our laws come from
What our shops / TV / High Streets look like at different times of year
Our language / phrases (many commonly used idioms come from the Bible or other religious sources)
And so on...
Final Tips
Make it personal – how religion affects your life, not how it affects people in general.
Make it interesting – Nepalese children your age will see this and be formulating opinions about England and English people as a result.
Plan your time (you will get more support with this next module) so that you meet the deadline and produce something of high quality.
