Marketing: how is eco-driving known – and why
3 2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration Economical driving Some of the messages being used: Reduce your fuel consumption and save money You can reduce the influence on environment and climate by practising economical driving Global warming (climate changes) can be restrained through reduction of carbon dioxide emissions (which are in direct proportion to fuel consumption) A growing interest in environmental issues and the ever existing interest in money are the main reasons
3 The Swedish word used in the curriculum is "sparsam", which means "to economize" as well as "to be careful" Eco-driving, heavy Eco-driving We must reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cars and trucks to impede the development of global warming, Impede the development of global warming is heard more and more often in the debate

How eco-driving is integrated in theory lessons, practical lessons, the theory test and the practical test
2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration Theory lessons: Environment lessons in driving schools Practical lessons: Most of the driving schools are, from the beginning, integrating eco-driving principles in the training (e.g. low rpms, jumping gears)

One part of the theory test is including items on different aspects of environmental influence.
2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration Eight sub-goals in the curriculum: the meaning of the environmental demands of the vehicles driving techniques (driving styles) possible to use for driving safely and environmentally friendly how conscious or impulsive actions, sensation-seeking, thrills, pleasure, playing etc. may influence environment how the use of the car will change from younger days until growing older and what impact that may have on environment rules and regulations concerning environmental issues dicussed in this part of curriculum construction and functions of the vehicle and what impact that may have on environment how choice of vehicle, travelling company and route may influence environment how choice of mode of transportation may influence environment

The practical driving test
2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration Sub-goal in the curriculum: using a driving technique leading to low fuel consumption ("Fuel consumption" is focused on as a specified object of assessment as it is one important part of "ECO-driving", even if there are a couple of other ecological aspects to consider referring to the concept "ECO", as demonstrated in the theoretical part)

2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration Using a driving technique leading to low fuel consumption Avoid unnecessary idling Choose gear to save as much fuel as possible, but still provide a comfortable ride. Using the engine to slow down Avoid great changes in speed, unnecessary braking or stops by good scanning routines and proper speed adjustment How starting and edging along should be done How to use the gears, and how acceleration should be done Keep a proper distance to vehicles in front To keep in mind !

How strictly eco-driving is applied and assessed
2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration Environmentally friendly driving shall be included in the test as a natural part and shall not take precedence over other things in the assessment of the candidate’s driving. It shall be valued like other objectives in the curriculum, in an overall judgement of the test. Moreover, traffic safety will always take priority.

How strictly eco-driving is applied and assessed
2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration A total compliance to "economical driving" principles will not be required, but if no sign of economical driving techniques is demonstrated this will be seen as a constant fault and will lead to failure of the candidate. There should obviously be some action of that kind in the candidate’s driving; some evidence that the candidate has started to think in the right direction and has also started to adopt those techniques.

My personal assessment of how effectively eco-driving is trained and tested in Sweden
2008-06-20 Swedish Road Administration It is too early to judge the effectiveness of eco-driving in the test. It is anyhow important that it will be assessed and can contribute in the decision of pass or fail. Otherwise it may not be taken seriously in the training. The competence to teach is there in many driving schools already. For those only practising by accompanied driving it might be a problem (at least in the beginning) Important with a good description of how economical driving will be assessed and how it will be included in the test. As "EcoDriving" very much is a matter of good planning, it will also have a positive impact on traffic safety. I can see only winners in this system (maybe petrol stations excluded)
