Same sex as P(II)
Smallest age difference between P(II) and C(II) – maximum 10 years
If both concordant and discordant choice is possible, random shift between concordant and discordant choice
Data collection procedure
Pilot study results :
Use register data for identification of P(I) persons
Inquire district home helpers about relatives to P(I) persons
Collect information about other persons during visits at P(I) persons
Drawback :
A number of P(I) persons visited will not be ECHA subjects
Identification

Family members
Based on 76 interviews Living children of probands :
Progress on G(II) interviews
17 interviews on G(II) individuals done
1 child of proband did not want to give a blood sample
1 discordant family refused to participate due to death of proband P(I)
Age range of G(II) interviewed persons are 60 – 79 years, mean age 68.2 years
Problems
Age of individuals - gen. II
The age of study persons is lower than expected
It may be difficult to measure any differences in physical and/or cognitive function among the two cousins
Implication for the discussion of frailty index..
Conclusion
Of 248 persons from P(I) study base, 106 persons have been interviewed, leading to at least 43 possible full ECHA families
With 75 % participation rate among G(II) about 25 of the pairs will be included in the final study
10 % of the P(I) study base will be included as ECHA members
Future
Time needed for remaining data collection estimated to 24 months
Additional funds has been raised for employing one more interviewer
Data collection finished July 1, 2004
