Before you go…….. Why do Work Placement?

Linking theory and practice Developing professional attitudes & skills Strategic advantage Learning about the work & the workplace Is this really the career for YOU? Healthier finances & fun

Opportunities for Learning Different Ways of Learning

Academic – lectures, assignments, examinations Workplace – not so cut and dried not labelled “learning opportunity”

Planning Ahead

What do you want from the placement Enhance specific transferable skills – audit Learn which company cultures suit you Talk to those there last year for any tips

When you get there……..

Adhere to rules/culture of the organisation Appropriately dressed – dress code Be on time always Point of contact if ill First name terms Breaks-coffee/lunch Be professional in all dealings Ask questions & if in doubt – clarify

Projects Be remembered for the right reasons

Initially don’t expect too much Do these well – lead to bigger projects Work protocol – look, listen, ask, learn Laboratory techniques Report writing (templates, quality control) Meetings Deadlines Sign offs Management style – top-down, teams

Managing your Placement

Meet supervisor and negotiate your role Meet supervisor to review progress Weekly evaluate what has been achieved and how Highlight any particular problems or areas of difficulty and try and have suggested solutions Check confidentiality issues for your report Prepare well for any meetings

Log Book

Daily/Weekly reflect on incidents and record Every success, every difficulty is a learning experience Name the skills/techniques/procedures with which you feel competent Ask for feedback Basis for future Job Applications, Interviews & Placement report

Ask yourself Questions!

You may find you can do something now which would have worried you before. Think of a mistake. What have you learnt? Have you encountered an especially difficult/tricky situation at work? Have you had any problems interacting with other people.

To-do or not To-do

Do - Record what you are picking up daily Show initiative in asking about wider issues and implications Ask for additional responsibilities Don’t - Sit in a corner waiting for work Judge placement too quickly Take Chances – ALWAYS ASK FIRST

Final Year – What’s Ahead of You

Good Luck with your placements and I look forward to meeting you next year when you are taking the next step in your Careers. Thank you Q & A
